Chris and I left Lynchburg and headed east towards Virginia
Beach. We stopped off in Farmville for the night, which was an unexpected
charming little town, with rich history, that coincided with what we had
learned at Appomattox. The next morning we rose early and headed for Virginia
Beach. Upon arrival we could hear the roar of some kind of aircraft overhead.
Thinking the sky must really busy with airplanes we scoped out a Walmart. Chris
had spotted an AMC so we headed towards the theatre (on Chris’ birthday wish
list was to see a film). Once we got to the theatre we realized that what
thought were airplanes were Fighter Jets (F-18 Hornets), practicing aircraft
carrier landings at the nearby naval base. They were flying so low that you
could see the details on the under carriage of the plane, and it was dark
outside. These Fighter jets were passing over us 3 jets per minute! The sound
was unnerving, and it made us dizzy looking straight up at one after the other
roaring over our heads. Every time they passed over was a new experience of delight and amazement.
We kept looking at each other with wide eyes, “Did you see that?” we would say
to each other, over and over again. We made it safely across the parking lot
(it was hard not to look up) to buy our tickets for the next showing of Valor (a great movie). The courtyard
that housed the theatre was beautiful, but I found it strange that they
prohibited the use of any kind of
sentence punctuation. Very strange…weird.
The movie wasn’t for another hour, so there was time to make
something light for dinner. By the time we got back to the Skamper the sound
was so intense that I had to pull out some ear plugs (I have been to some long
races and heard nothing but loud cars for an entire weekend and never have I
put an ear plug in). As we headed back to the theatre the jets were still
going, we heard them a couple times
while watching the movie, this went on until about 12AM.
