Mako Sica
The Siox, a Native American tribe, named this area "Mako Sica," mako meaning land, sica meaning bad, "land bad". Today it is Badlands National Park, I just found out that the National Parks Service didn't want to name it Badlands, when established in 1928, because they thought it was too negative. Besides the challenging terrain, and lack of water, the badlands has severe weather. The summers reach 110, and snow and rain erode the landscape up to one inch per year!!, thus making the rugged towering rock formations ever-changing. Theodore Roosevelt found this land fascinating, and I am grateful for his love of nature and his desire to preserve it for future generations.
