Corn Palace

The Corn Palace is a huge tourist destination but that is really why it was established, 1892, in the first place. My grandmother told me about the Corn Palace when I came across a brochure in her travel book of things she had done on her trip across the U.S., so of course I had to go check it out when I realized we were near. Early settlers built the palace out of corn, fruit, and other grains to prove the fertility of the soil in South Dakota, so others would join in settling in the area. If you look closely at the pictures you can see that the murals and walls are all out of corn, and some bushels of rye, etc. When the corn crop is ready, nearly 275 thousand ears of corn are sawed in half lengthwise and nailed to the building every year. The murals are a different theme every year, created by a local artist. This years theme is Saluting Youth Athletes
